COVID-19

VACCINATION FOR KIDS

A COVID-19 vaccine is the best way to protect children from the virus, and is essential if we want to curb it from spreading. Like adults, children are equally vulnerable to the novel coronavirus. Studies show that infection and transmission in children and adults are alike. While most children may have an asymptomatic or mild infection, they might become carriers i.e an important source of transmission to others.

Severe infections and mortality have frequently been reported in young infants and children with comorbidities, largely post 3-6 weeks of asymptomatic or symptomatic infection. The incidence of Multisystem inflammatory syndrome (MIS-C) is a rare but life-threatening complication of Covid 19 infection, which may rarely lead to long term coronary artery changes.

  • Talk to your child before the visit, about what to expect.
  • Tell the doctor or nurse about any allergies your child may have.
  • Comfort your child during the appointment.
  • To prevent fainting and injuries related to fainting, your child should be seated or lying down during vaccination and for 15 minutes after the vaccine is given.
  • After your child’s COVID-19 vaccination, you will be asked to stay for 15–30 minutes, so that your child can be observed, in case they have a severe allergic reaction and need immediate treatment.

service
Headache
service
service
Muscle pain
service
Joint Pain
service
Chills & Fever

Similar to adults, children will have side effects that typically last 1 to 3 days. More adolescents reported these side effects, except for injection site pain, after the second dose of the vaccine. However, some people have no side effects.

It is recommended that you do not give your child an over-the-counter pain reliever before the vaccination, to prevent side effects.

It’s alright to give this kind of medication after your child gets a COVID-19 vaccine, as guided by the doctor.

EVEN AFTER YOU'RE

VACCINATED, KEEP TAKING PRECAUTIONS

While a COVID-19 vaccine will prevent serious illness and death, we still don’t know the extent to which it keeps you from being infected and passing the virus on to others.

The more we allow the virus to spread, the more opportunity the virus has to change and mutate.

Continue to take actions to slow and eventually stop the spread of the virus:

  • Keep at least a 2 metre distance from others
  • Wear a mask, especially in crowded, closed and poorly ventilated settings.
  • Clean your hands frequently
  • Cover any cough or sneeze in your bent elbow
  • When indoors with others, ensure good ventilation, such as by opening a window

Note: The content provided here is in reference to the global scenario. Currently, the permissible age for Indian citizens to get vaccinated for COVID-19 is 18 years and older. Vaccines for youth between 12 and 18 years have to still be launched here, and will be available after their efficacy on this age group has been thoroughly tested.
