Breastfeeding in Public Spaces

You've finally started stepping out with your baby, and it feels like a big win and milestone. Then you find yourself hesitating in public places or at a family get together, because your baby is hungry and you need to feed your child but you're unsure where to do so, in a comfortable environment.

Your first thoughts:

As a new mother you are still navigating several new territories all at once, and it can feel overwhelming and unnerving. The first thoughts you have about feeding your baby when you're out are:

  • Where can I find a private space, to feed my little one peacefully?
  • What if I have to feed the baby in a public space, and people are staring at me?
  • What will they think about me?
  • Should I let my baby stay hungry for just 15-20 minutes, and go home instead?

Unlike abroad, we in India have a slightly different etiquette for various occasions. While people raised in a western culture are very casual and open about several things, Indians prefer to maintain decorum and be more discreet.

"So what should I do when my baby is hungry?"

Yes, we hear you and we understand. Before anything else, calm down because you can do this.

Firstly, if your baby has not yet started consuming semi-solid food, then satiating their hunger is the first and most important thing for you as a mother.

There are some simple, practical and helpful ways that you can get through this, and we will share these with you.

Just before stepping out:

Initially, when you start stepping out with your baby, do it for a shorter duration so that you start gaining confidence about managing yourself and your baby.

Feed just before going out so that your child's tummy is full, and s/he is not restless or hungry for some time at least.

Take your partner and family's help:

Having a baby is an equal responsibility. If you are stepping out with your hubby or family members, take their help in finding a quiet corner to sit and feed. Let them know that they should please handle the awkward glares, while you take care of your little one's needs.

Dresses with zip enclosures:

Nowadays, stores and brands are stocking Indian as well as western wear especially designed for new mothers. These shirts, long dresses or kurtas have discreet zips as well as an outer flap to cover you, while you feed.

Nursing covers:

While shopping for the above, you can also add some attractive nursing covers to your shopping cart. These are made from soft fabrics and styled like capes, so they can be easily carried in your baby bag.

You can also carry a long, cotton scarf or dupatta to lightly cover yourself, without making the baby feel uncomfortable or sweaty.

Nursing rooms:

Thankfully nowadays, in urban cities, more and more malls, hotels and cinema multiplexes have dedicated spaces for mothers to feed their infants, or change diapers. You can try and survey beforehand if such a facility is available where you're going, and ask for directions as soon as you enter the place.

This will help you be calm and know where to go, when your baby needs a feed.

Be the change:

Without being radical or appearing rebellious, you can still be the change you are seeking. You can fulfill your role as a new mom calmly, and inspire other new moms to also take this in their stride.

Don't hesitate to ask for help from staff at public places, or request another woman to be with you while you feed your baby. You should also do the same for other new moms, whenever the opportunity arises.

There are support groups online, for lactating mothers. You can search for them and connect with other new mothers to share tips and concerns.

Changing cultures and mindsets:

While there is still quite a bit of discomfort in Indian society about seeing a woman breastfeeding in a public space, it is important that we all learn to respect a mother when she does so.

We should also teach this to our children and youth, and encourage them to be mindful when they notice a woman feeding her baby. Instead of staring, passing comments or mocking, they should politely go their own way.

You've got this:

There are many new milestones, challenges, joyful highs and new experiences waiting around the corner for you.

Always remember - as a mother, you know your children best, and you can intuitively understand their needs. So, trust yourself and remind yourself of your innate strength as a mother. You CAN DO this!
