Menopause is the scientific term that describes the permanent cessation of menstrual bleeding in aged women, typically between 45 and 50 years, due to natural depletion of ovarian oocytes. It’s a natural process that marks the end of fertility period. After menopause, it’s no longer possible for a woman to conceive. Menopause occurs mainly due to a fall in the levels of hormones like estrogen.
Symptoms of menopause
Usually, a lack of menstrual cycle in an aged woman for a year or more signifies the end of her reproductive phase. Menopause isn’t really a disorder of disease. However, there might be some profound changes in the body of a woman undergoing menopause.
A number of symptoms of menopause can also appear during this period.
- Changes in menstrual patterns, or irregular periods.
- Less fertility. The peri-menopause period, usually lasting for about 3-5 years before menopause occurs, is marked by near nil chances of conception.
- Vaginal dryness, itchiness and discomfort. Vaginal atrophy, or inflammation of vagina may also occur.
- Sudden sensation of heat in the body, called hot flashes.
- Restless sleeping patterns.
- Menopause can also lead to severe to mild urinary problems in women.
- Mood swings and depression are a common thing faced by most women during menopause. This is mainly due to the “hormonal war” raging inside the body.
- Also breast cancer. Risks of breast cancer can be somewhat lesser if regular exercise is practice.

Treatment of Menopause
Menopause is a natural condition that doesn’t or shouldn’t have a ‘treatment’. However, the discomforting symptoms that come as a price with it can be controlled or treated by several methods.
- Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). By this process, external doses of estrogen and progesterone are administered to a woman’s body to reduce menopausal symptoms.
- Individual drug treatments which have a narrow symptom oriented treatment pattern. These help in keeping such symptoms at bay.
